Since its european launch a couple of weeks ago, Baboon! has been very well recieved by the media and players alike. We’re very happy about that in the studio at Relevo, and would like to share some of what’s been said with you all.
And we’ll start strong with a favourite of mine. This quote from Punk and Lizard says it all: “Let’s cut to the chase. Is Baboon good? Yes. But prepare to go Planet of the Apesh*t because this game will drive you absolutely bananas“. Both brilliant and accurate ;-).
Baboon!, as The Vita Lounge says, is “a cute looking game that combines platforming with puzzles – and packs a challenge that defies the cartoony looks of the game“. Felix Online puts it well, “It is this simple main game mechanic that could be learnt in seconds and take hours to master that makes the game so addictive“.
Talking about the graphics, IGN Spain thinks that our visual style “stands out from other independent developments for how varied its colour palette is“. While for Generación Pixel, “The graphics are pure love“, and Videshock states that “Aesthetically Baboon! drinks from 90s Japanese arcades, while taking advantage of today’s better conditions“.
We’re very proud of the work Yugenstudio has done with Baboon!’s Original Soundtrack, and all of the reviewers seem to agree. For Hobby Consolas, “The main theme is highly catchy and you’ll be whistling it nonstop for weeks. Be warned“. Same as for LaPS4, “The main theme of the game is so catchy that you can’t stop singing it for hours“. And over at Desconsolados, they just loved the music. “Although the best without a doubt is the music. Hideyuki Fukasawa, of Super Street Fighter 4 fame among others, has done a great job with melodies that will easily stay in your head even long after turning off the console“.
But the star of the show, no doubt, it’s how addictive and challenging Baboon! is despite its cuteness ;-). For Charlie Large, from The Vita Lounge, “No matter how annoyed I got at how difficult the game was (or how good the game was at pointing out how bad my aim was) I found myself going back to Baboon! and overcoming whatever challenge I struggled with previously“. While over at Thesixthaxis, they found that “Happily the developers have also managed to capture the most vital ingredient from games of the past, the “one more go” factor. It may take you twenty, thirty, or more tries to complete a level, but you will go back and finish it“. And they close their review with “The simple fact is that despite turning the game off every ten minutes and vowing never to play it again, I kept coming back to Baboon! It is annoyingly addictive, and I mean that in every sense, it will annoy the hell out of you“. Also Vandal highlights its variation, as “when you start to get the hang out of Baboon!, it changes the rules again, asking you for more.”
Everyone is enjoying their time with Baboon!. It looks like people have been waiting for a good challenge! Videshock thinks that Baboon! is “a true triumph of the classic gameplay and style in modern times“, while for Punk and Lizard our game is “Challenging, humorous and addictive, Relevo have bestowed a classic formula upon the Vita. Baboon is the bomb, if you’re up for the challenge of course…”
